No necesita aprender nada nuevo.

With these new tablets, Wacom has simplified its consumer-level offerings—formerly five tablets under the Bamboo name with varying price points and features—into just three devices, the Bamboo Connect, Capture, and Create. For this revision, the company has attempted to target a specific swath of the tablet market for each model, rather than promote them by features alone.

The $80 Bamboo Connect, Wacom’s entry-level tablet, is designed for business illustration and simple doodles. Clad in black with a bright green accent, the device features a 5.8-inch-by-3.6-inch work area and 1024 levels of pressure awareness using one of the company’s signature pens with programmable side-buttons. Users can connect the tablet to their laptop or desktop via USB, and have the option of working with it using included software like Autodesk’s Sketchbook Express, digital inking functionality within Microsoft Office, or any other installed illustration application.

The mid-level consumer offering, the $100 Bamboo Capture, offers the same surface area as the Connect; with this silver-and-black tablet, however, users will get the ability to use multitouch gestures (up to 16 discrete touch points, and full support for gestures in Mac OS X Lion); and optional wireless connectivity (using a $39 accessory). By including a full version of Photoshop Elements in addition to Sketchbook Express, it looks like Wacom hopes to market the Capture toward photographers, though budding illustrators should also enjoy the device’s capabilities.

On the high end of the spectrum, the $200 Bambo Create is solidly an artist’s tool: The tablet provides a full 8.5 inches by 5.4 inches of pressure-sensitive pen and multitouch workspace (in comparison to the Connect and Capture’s 5.8 inches by 3.6 inches), adds a pressure-sensitive eraser to the end of the stylus, and ships with Corel’s Painter Essentials along with Photoshop Elements and Sketchbook Express. And, like the Capture, users can enable wireless connectivity using Wacom’s $39 Plug-n-Play Wireless module. With the features it offers, the Create looks like it could fill a crucial niche for artists-in-training who can’t yet shell out $399 for a wireless Intuos4 tablet.

You can pick up one of the tablets from Wacom’s website, or from one of the company’s authorized resellers. All three tablets support both Mac and Windows operating systems; users can download the correct driver from Wacom’s website.

It’s like the Oscars, but nerdier, and with a far lesser chance of Ricky Gervais showing up. While last year’s event shut out Mac apps from consideration, the 2011 ADAs once again honored both Mac and iOS developers alike. Apple says ADAs go to developers who demonstrate excellence in the areas of design, innovation, and technnology. The award itself—a coveted cube—was accompanied this year by a MacBook Air, iPad 2, and iPod touch.

At Tuesday’s event, Apple presented awards in four categories: Student, iPhone, Mac, and iPad. In the Student category, Apple recognized Grades 2 by Tapity, Pennant by Vargatron, and Pulse News Reader by Alphonso Labs.

Awards in the iPhone category went to Chillingo for Cut the Rope, Shotzoom for Golfscape GPS Rangefinder, and Chair Entertainment for Infinity Blade.

The three iPad apps recognized were Osmos by Hemisphere Games, Our Choice by Push Pop Press, and Djay by Algoriddim.

To qualify for an ADA, Mac software had to be sold through the Mac App Store; Mac software sold elsewhere wasn’t eligible this year. The three Mac App Store titles recognized this year were Capo by SumerMegaUltraGroovy, Pixelmator by Pixelmator Team, and Anomaly: Warzone Earth by 11 Bit Studios.

I was in the third hour of a three-hour meeting on the afternoon of October 5, 2011, and I was feeling a bit punchy. The day before was an all-out sprint to cover Apple’s press conference and its fallout, along with plenty of technical snafus. So I was tired, the room was warm, and my mind was drifting.

Fatigue and stuffiness led to an inappropriately Deep Thought. And so I was struck by the fact that all of us has a bond that is unstated, obvious, and yet incredibly relevant: We’re all alive right now. We’re the people who lived through the end of the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st. Not just the people in the conference room, but every single one of us. Despite all our differences, we share one huge bond: we are the people who are alive right now, right this very moment. We weren’t in the past, and we won’t be at some indeterminate point in the future, but right now we are all living in the world.
I walked back upstairs after the meeting and almost immediately got the news that Steve Jobs was gone from that world.
When I got back here in 1997, I was looking for more room, and I found an archive of old Macs and other stuff. I said, ‘Get it away!’ and I shipped all that s—- off to Stanford. If you look backward in this business, you’ll be crushed. You have to look forward.
—Steve Jobs, 2009
I didn’t know Steve Jobs. Most of us didn’t. I interacted with him a few times, asking a few press-conference questions, interviewing him on the phone once. But like the rest of you, I felt some sort of strange connection with him. He was the face of the company I’ve covered for coming up on 20 years. His return to Apple saved it from oblivion. And then we got the world-changing products: Not just the Mac, which had redefined what a “personal computer” was in the ’80s, but the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad.
Steve Jobs didn’t invent those products singlehandedly in his garage, legends be damned. There are hundreds of brilliant people at Apple who deserve the credit for making the company’s incredibly popular products. But Steve Jobs was the guy who created the environment those products were built in. He’s the one who prodded the people at Apple to make their prototypes better. He made Apple what it is. What the company does from here on out, it does because of him.
Jobs’s greatest creation isn’t any Apple product. It is Apple itself.
—John Gruber, 2011
